To produce a quality wine, the wine grower carefully selects the best vines. ORTIS follows the same approach in selecting the ginseng used.
There are a number of varieties of ginseng. ORTIS uses only Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer from Manchuria, because it is the only variety which contains the right proportions of adaptogenic substances. This variety of ginseng provides better stamina for physical and intellectual exertion. It can rebalance the body.
The marshy, fertile soil of the hard to reach wooded, shady hillsides of Manchuria, is the best environment for ginseng. It grows there in the middle of nowhere, before being harvested.
ORTIS selects growers who use traditional harvesting methods. These growers plant ginseng roots in the marshy soil of the Manchurian hillsides, under little structures which give the ginseng the right amount of shade. They then leave the roots to grow for six years. Use of pesticides and fertiliser is, of course, strictly prohibited. This means that the ginseng is completely organic.
However, that’s not all! ORTIS requires its growers to meet GAP (good agricultural practice) standards. These are global standards imposed on farmers and horticulturists in terms of food safety, sustainability and quality. The GAP standards lay down codes of ethics which aim to reduce or avoid food contamination. In particular, these codes require compliance with multiple hygiene protocols. Good agricultural practice (GAP) is a system which optimises the quality of the raw materials put in place so that the secondary products meet European pharmacopoeia standards, particularly in terms of pesticides and heavy metals.
