“Panax” is a generic name which refers to Asian ginseng, i.e. the true original ginseng. In plant medicine, only the root is used. The shape of this thick, white-coloured variety resembles the human body, hence the name “ginseng”, derived from “ren shen” which roughly means “man-root”. The term “Panax” comes from the Greek word “Panacea”, meaning “cure-all”. The complete name “Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer” refers to Carl Anton von Meyer, the 19th century Russian botanist who described the plant.

There are numerous other varieties of ginseng, such as “Ginseng quinquefolius” from America, “Ginseng japonicus” from Japan and even European ginseng. However, no other variety has the same adaptogenic properties as “Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer” from Manchuria. The other varieties of ginseng also have beneficial properties, but most of them are only soothing or stimulating.
